The day was foggy, overcast, a tad nostalgic. She couldn't see where she was going, but she pressed the stop button anyway. It wasn't her sense of sight, hearing or smell that guided her towards the beginning of her adventure...no, there was a sixth sense, a homing instinct like the salmon of the Atlantic struggling up the river where they were born.
The bus stopped, the door opened, the musty yet warm air inside mingled with the refreshing but chilly breeze outside. She got off, and then the heavens let loose.
"Fuck, it's gonna be another shit day today," she thought for just a second, before she realised, "fuck, I'm cold, I need something warm."
There wasn't a Starbucks near where she was, so she settled with a McCafe instead. She grabbed a hot chocolate and a few macarons, sat down next to the window, and watched the raindrops splattering against the window. By now, what was a slight tickle of rain became a rather severe downpour, especially near the middle of summer.
It was difficult to let her mind go blank, but something like the trails of the drops of rain on the window, something so simple, allowed her to finally feel at ease. The strains imposed on her from work, relationships, commitments evaporated like her breath on the windowpane. For a glimmer of a moment, there was literally nothing to think about. She was unable to bear the rift in her thoughts though, so she compensated by watching (silently betting on) the raindrops compete against each other in falling down faster.
The macarons had disappeared and the hot chocolate was a puddle of condensed chocolate powder residue, but rain had still not relented. She looked at the time. 4:30PM. It would take her an hour at least to get home, so she stood up reluctantly and made for the bus stop. It was only across the road...through rain, wind and cold, but onward towards reality again.
"Well fuck, looks like I'll be late for dinner."
